After saving for 8 months, I ordered a new PC tower and a one year warranty from Best Buy. My old PC tower was more than 10 years old, and extremely slow in processing information. The first refurbished PC tower I ordered from Best Buy arrived in late September, and would not turn on. I took it back to Best Buy, who could not turn the unit on either; another refurbished PC tower was ordered, and arrived two weeks later. I was able to set up the new refurbished tower, transfer all my files, and begin computing with a wonderful quickness. Ten weeks later, watching a day of Impeachment testimony, I placed my PC in the "Sleep" mode - it never woke up. I did everything I knew to re-awaken it and then ran a Diagnostics test. Then I called the Geek Squad at Best Buy.
I took the tower in, they ran diagnostics, and sent it away to be fixed. I received an e-mail from the repair center saying they had fixed the problem, and they were sending the tower back to Best Buy. Ten days after I received that e-mail, I called Best Buy to inquire on the whereabouts of my tower - surely, even though it is the Holiday season, since it only took 3 days in transit to arrive at the repair center, it shouldn't take more than 9 days for the return... When I called, the technician took my name, and then said.... "oh. The junked tower." That freaked me out.
Yesterday evening I was at Best Buy looking at new PC towers. Of course I had purchased a refurbished one, as it is/was much less expensive than buying a totally new unit. I had ordered an HP 8300i, with 8 gigs of memory, and a terabyte hard drive, along with the 1 year Geek Squad protection plan and warranty. Apparently, since the first tower was damaged in transit to Best Buy, and I was told that "UPS had damaged" the repaired second tower while it was in transit from the repair center back to Best Buy, the store decided that I had to choose a new PC tower from those in stock, in the store, only. I was, seemingly, expected to pay another $200+ to purchase a new tower that matched the specifications of the refurbished one that I had ordered and that had been damaged by no fault of mine. I had to choose a different PC tower with half of the memory, because I did not have money to make up the difference. Then they informed me I had to purchase another year's warranty, at full cost, for the new PC tower, because the old one "was junked out."
I lost my temper, and, as usual, got teary-eyed while doing so. The store manager was called, and heard me out again. I was "given" a one year warranty on the new tower, but, because the new PC tower, with half of the memory I wanted, cost more than the ordered refurbished tower, I still had to pay $3.14 out-of-pocket for a replacement of the one broken by UPS.
My one question of why I couldn't order another refurbished tower at the same price as the first two was never answered.
Apparently, the Geek Squad was able to remove my personal files (hopefully, all of them) from "the junked tower" and is transferring them to my new PC tower. I have an appointment to pick up the new tower Friday evening....
The only problem with the timing of this is that I start house- and pet-sitting in Louisville tomorrow, and will only have 90 minutes a day at home with my kits, Lovey and Nedi. I'll also be trying to get the new PC tower connected, and getting my usual programs added and set up....
So I may not be totally and completely back up and in full force on the internet until 4 January, or later. I give you my apologies now - for I would like to be sharing photos and other things, that I can't do from the 10-year-old laptop that I've been loaned for the interim....
