Favorite Wins Kentucky Oaks 2021

Eight years ago, Dreaming of Julia was the betting favorite to win the Kentucky Oaks.  Today, her three-year-old daughter, Malathaat, won the Kentucky Oaks as the betting favorite.  The bay daughter of Curlin was sent off as the 5 to 2 betting favorite in today's 147th Run for the Lilies.  She stumbled out of the gate, but was in fifth place halfway through the race.  Malathaat was three-wide on the first turn, and four-wide on the second turn.  Search Results took the lead in the stretch, but Malathaat slowly wore down her lead and edged past her for a neck win.  Just as people were approaching the filly with her floral drape of lilies, Malathaat jumped to the left and jockey John R. Velazquez (49 this year) vaulted from the stirrups to the right, landing on his feet.
Malathaat covered the 9 furlongs in 1:48.99, and took home $713,000 for the win.  Irad Ortiz, Jr guided Search Results into second place, and pounded Velazquez on the back in congratulations after they passed the finish line.  Search Results banked $230,000, beating Will's Secret ($115,000) by 2 3/4 lengths, who was a nose in front of Clairiere ($57,500).
Search Results is hidden behind winner Malathaat

As usual, I list bet pay-outs for a $2 bet...  Malathaat paid $7 to win; Search Results paid $5.80 to place; and Will's Secret paid $9.60 to show.  A $2 perfecta paid $37.80; the trifecta paid $929; and the superfecta paid $5,617.40.
The complete of order of finish was:
1.    Malathaat    by a neck
2.    Search Results   by 2 3/4 lengths
3.    Will's Secret    by a nose
4.    Clairiene

Post Positions and Morning-Line Betting Odds For the 147th Kentucky Oaks

On Friday, 30 April, the 147th running (or 148th, if you count the two Oaks races in 1959) of the Kentucky Oaks will occur.  It's the first jewel in the Triple Tiara for fillies, and is always run the day before the Kentucky Derby.  This race is for 3-year-old fillies only.  They race at Churchill Downs for a guaranteed purse of $1,250,000.  The girls carry 121 pounds each over a route of 9 furlongs (1 1/8 miles) on the main dirt track.  This year the gate time is listed as 5:51 EDT.
The post positions and betting odds were drawn and set on Monday.  Today, Ava's Grace, who had drawn the 7 post, was scratched and taken to the Hagyard Equine Center outside of Lexington for a full evaluation.  Her exact problem is unknown, but the trainer and owners decided she needed a thorough check-up.
With Ava's Grace out of the race, there are now 13 entries, all bred in Kentucky.  Four of the fillies are gray/roan, two are chestnut, and the other seven are bays.  Ten stallions are represented by the thirteen fillies; Flatter sired two, Pass the Champagne and Search Results; Curlin sired three, Clairiere, Malathaat, and Millefeuille.  Malathaat, trained by Todd Pletcher, is the morning-line betting favorite at 5 to 2, and is undefeated.

The posted gate time for the147th Kentucky Derby has been announced as 6:57 pm EDT.  This morning, post positions for the $3 million guaranteed race were drawn, and morning-line betting odds were announced.  Unless there are scratches, a full field of 20 will start the race on Saturday, 1 May, at Churchill Downs.  All of the 3-year-old colts will carry 1126 pounds in the 10 furlong (1 1/4 miles) race. Caddo River Scratched From Kentucky Derby

Caddo River, the son of Hard Spun, out of Pangburn, was withdrawn as an entry to the May 1st Kentucky Derby due to a fever.  That opens the way for Brooklyn Strong, a son of Wicked Strong, out of Riviera Chic, to be one of the 20 entries for the Derby.  Churchill Downs has no other entry alternates available as alternate entries, as the other point-earners have stated they are training for races, and/or do not plan to participate in the Derby.
Therefore, the 2021 Run for the Roses will have 20 or less entries, if any other colt becomes ill or lame. The Draw for Post Positions will occur at 10:30 EDT tomorrow (Tuesday, 27 April).  Shortly thereafter, morning-line betting odds will be announced.  I will post all of that tomorrow.  The pre-race favorite has been Essential Quality, who won the Breeders Cup Juvenile, is undefeated, and has the most points qualifying for the Derby.
Essential Quality, by Tapit, out of Delightful Quality

Post time for the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby is at 6:50 EDT.  The purse is guaranteed at $3 million; the 3-year-old colts will each carry 126 pounds; and the race distance is 10 furlongs (1 1/4 miles) on the main (dirt) track.  The race is held at Churchill Downs, outside of Louisville, Kentucky.

The2021 Kentucky Derby Is One Week Away!

At the moment, it looks as if a full field of 20 will contend the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs on Saturday, 1 May.  Today, the racing connections of both Dream Shake and Hozier decided to bypass the Derby, which will allow King Fury to run, based on points earned.  There are usually 2 or 3 horses "on stand-by" in the points-earned arena that keep training for the Derby in case of a scratch due to injury, illness, or a decision of the owners and trainer.
Into Mischief will be represented by 3 colts in the Derby,
if there are no scratches.

The race will be run at the usual mile and a quarter (10 furlongs), with a purse of $3 million guaranteed, on the first Saturday in May.  All the entries are colts, so each will carry 126 pounds.  In the top 23 points earners - I'm including the top three alternates - there are 18 stallions represented.  Two colts were sired by Curlin, Dialed In, and Union Rags; with three colts sired by Into Mischief.
Dialed In will be represented by 2 colts, if no scratches.

Here are the top 23 point earners for the 2021 Kentucky Derby:
1.    Essential Quality
2.    Hot Rod Charlie
3.    Super Stock
4.    Like the King
5.    Known Agenda

The 2021 Kentucky Derby Is 20 Days Away

The powers-that-be in the Triple Crown decided, apparently, that last year's mess, with the races being run in reverse order and the Belmont Stakes being run at a much shorter distance, was a disaster.  This year, with a second season of racing still occurring under pandemic conditions, the Triple Crown races will be run on the usual dates and at the usual distances, in the usual places.
The Kentucky Derby will be run at Churchill Downs on Saturday, 1 May.  The 3-year-olds will race 1 1/4 miles and the colts will carry 126 pounds each.  The purse is $3 million.  There have been two notable scratches from the Derby ranks in the last week - the Shug McGaughey trainee, Greatest Honour, and Rebel's Romance, the winner of the UAE Derby will be missing.  Greatest Honour is getting a 60-day vacation from training; Rebel's Romance will be pointed at the Belmont Stakes, instead.
Essential Quality, with 140 points, is undefeated

As in the recent past, a three-year-old must qualify to run in the Kentucky Derby by earning enough points  to be qualified.  Only 20 entrants are allowed to race each year.  The Kentucky Derby is sponsored by Woodford Reserve, and they approve 36 races which will award points for Derby qualifications.  The first four finishers in each of these approved points races receive a certain number of points.  -  Rebel's Romance won 100 points for winning the UAE Derby on 27 March in Dubai; and King Fury, who won the Lexington Stakes today, was awarded 20 points.
On the day of the Post Position Draw for the Derby, besides the top 20 points-earners, who have declared their entry, a few more horses will also be drawn, in case one of the top 20 scratches, for whatever reason.  The colt with the most points is the 2-year-old champion of last year, Essential Quality, who won the Breeder's Cup Juvenile.
Bourbonic, who won the Wood Memorial, has 100 points
and is tied for the 6/7 position

Below is a listing of the top 30 contenders for the Kentucky Derby - their ranking, name, and number of points earned to date:

A Timeline of COVID-19 Around the World, From News Resources, For April 2021 - Updated Every 5 Days

It's been 54 weeks since COVID-19 - or SARS-CoV-2 - was pronounced a pandemic.  Vaccines are available now - to some.  Some countries have a glut of the vaccine, and some countries have yet to receive any doses of any type of vaccine.  The World Health Organization, a part of the United Nations, is trying to ensure an equitable distribution of the available vaccines, but it isn't working.
I became eligible to receive the vaccine here in Colorado on March 15, but I knew I'd be working outside my home for two weeks, and didn't want to take the chance of becoming ill from the vaccine (my body reacts oddly to a lot of things) while I was supposed to be working.  I will be making an appointment for my first of two doses tomorrow.  My best friend wanted to take the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, but it isn't available in Colorado.  I think she'll observe my reactions, and then get her vaccinations.
Due to the continuing pandemic, and all of the variations that are spreading, many events are again canceled for this year.  The Spring Chincoteague Pony Round-Up will take place on April 9 & 10, but without any observers other than the Fire Department, Salt Water Cowboys, and their dependents.  The Chincoteague Fireman's Carnival and Pony Penning have been cancelled as well.  The Pony Auction of this year's foals will be held on-line, as it was last year - we have 5 babies on the ground so far.
I'll report the numbers I've been reporting - world-wide, US, and the state of Colorado - for number of cases and deaths.  The first two sets are from the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Mapping database, and the third set is from the Colorado Department of Public Health.  I will also pass along the weekly WHO Epidemiological Report for countries reporting those numbers, along with the most important headline (to me, anyway) news stories of each week.  I will make this report on the first and last days of the month, and every 5 days in between.  This month, the reports will be on the 1st, 6th, 11th, 16th, 21st, 26th, and 30th.  *****  As always, my own person notes, asides, and comments will be marked with multiple asterisks before and after. *****  I will also include any news-worthy headlines regarding the previous squatter in the White House.
And, since it's April 1, my youngest cat, Nedi, turned 11 today...
