At odds of 12 to 1, and Bob Baffert's only entry in this Kentucky Derby, Florida-bred Medina Spirit took the early lead and stayed in front of 18 other thoroughbreds for 1 1/4 miles. There were 19 starters in the 147th Run for the Roses, with the scratch of King Fury yesterday. Jockey John R. Velazquez was the winning jockey today, just as he won the Kentucky Oaks yesterday on Malathaat. The 3 to 1 betting favorite, and 2-year-old champion, Essential Quality finished fourth, one length and a head behind the winner. It was Essential Quality's first loss on a track.
Medina Spirit ran the 10 furlongs in 2:01.02, and took home $1,860,000 for his bank account. He was 1/2 length in front of Mandaloun (at 26 to 1), who was a 1/2 length ahead of Hot Rod Charlie, who crossed the finish line a head before Essential Quality. Mandaloun banked $600,000; Hot Rod Charlie earned $300,000; Essential Quality received $150,000; and fifth-place O Besos was paid $90,000.
