When the 10 colts in the Preakness stepped into the starting gate this afternoon, Medina Spirit and Midnight Bourbon were co-betting favorites by odds - but with a little more money on Midnight Bourbon to win. Neither did.
Rombauer, a bay son of Twirling Candy, blasted by both Medina Spirit and Midnight Bourbon in the stretch at Pimlico, winning the 1 3/16 mile race in 1:53.62. Trained by Todd Pletcher protege Michael McCarthy, the 3-year-old finished 3 1/2 lengths ahead of Midnight Bourbon to earn $600,000 of the $1 million purse. Midnight Bourbon was 2 lengths ahead of Medina Spirit, who led Keepmeinmind by another 4 lengths. (So the three colts who raced in the Kentucky Derby finished second, third and fourth in the Preakness.)
