A year and a day ago, doctors in Wuhan, China contacted the World Health Organization, stating they had almost 3 dozen patients who were suffering from pneumonia from an unknown origin. Thus began the tale of the 2020 pandemic; and because the first report was actually in 2019, the novel coronavirus is now known as COVID-19.
Since March of 2020, my best friend (and apartment sharer) and I have only gone out once to do something other shopping, going on a day-long drive with a friend through Rocky Mountain National Park, wearing masks the entire time. If we go anywhere other than our balcony, we are wearing a facemask. We wash our hands and masks each time we step outside, and our door knobs and locks and keys are sanitized each time they are used. Our shoe are sprayed with sanitizing agents when we return home. We are both women in a mid-60s with a few health problems that make us fall into the "susceptible" grouping of citizens.
I am currently caring for the "pets" of a pair of artists who have made their usual journey down to Mexico for Christmas and the New Year. With the pandemic on-going, public transportation has been cut back, and it now takes me between 2 and 2 1/2 hours to make a trip to their house and back - it's a 2 mile walk. When the weather is good, I walk there and back. Anyway, here is my tale of last night's return home via the public bus system: Yesterday evening, I missed a couple of bus connections. I ended up at the main Boulder station with 15 to 20 minutes before my next bus would leave. - With winter, and the pandemic, people are asked not to stay inside for more than 10 minutes. - I went in, intending to read for 10 minutes. When I entered the door there was a man sitting in a wheelchair positioned halfway between the door and the seating area. He was facing the door. I made a large circle around him, chose a seat where I could see my bus arrive, sat down and pulled out my book.
I had just found my place and reacquainted myself with the previous 2 paragraphs, when the man started moaning and crying. I heard whimpers and high-pitched moans and statements of: Help me; oh, God, I need help; I hurt so bad; please help me. I closed my book and looked at him. He was wearing a pair of blue jeans, heavy wool socks, low boots, several shirts, a jacket and a hat - and a mask. He had a backpack attached to one side of his chair and another in his lap. - Then I realized that his jeans were below the tops of his thighs, and I could see lower back, buttocks, a hairy crack and upper thighs. I suppose the front was pulled up high enough to cover his crotch, along with the backpack sitting there.
I went over to the security guard, who was reading a book at his desk in the opposite corner. I told about the man moaning and crying and what he was saying - and I also said he had a bare naked butt. I went back to my seat. About 90 seconds later the guard approached the man and asked if he was OK. The man started to sob and said he was cold and sick and had no place to stay. The guard asked him about the Homeless Shelter; the man said he wasn't allowed to stay there anymore. The guard said he's contact HHS for Boulder for him; the man said they wouldn't help him anymore either. The guard told him he could stay inside for another 5 minutes, but then he had to leave; then the guard went back to his desk. Never said a word about his ass being bare.
I went outside, found a seat on a bench with a light and opened my book. Three minutes later, the man "walked" his chair out and right next to me - less than 3 inches from the end of my bench. (By "walked" I mean he used his feet and legs to walk the chair out - not his hands on the wheels.) As I got up to move away from him, he took his mask off, laid it in his lap, and asked me to help him by giving him $100. I laughed and continued to move away (I won't have any money in my account until 4 Jan.). I stopped in front of the door of the bus and started reading again. During the 8 minutes I waited for the bus door to open (I didn't get any reading done), the man coughed and spat more than 18 times.)
I called the non-emergency number for the Boulder Police Department and told them what was happening with the man in the wheelchair. They knew who it was, and told me to stay away from him. They thanked me for letting them know where he was, but again told me to just stay away from him.
I will post, daily, the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 numbers of cases and deaths for the world and the United States, as well as the Colorado Department of Health's numbers. Almost every day I will post headlines and internet links to those stories that grabbed my attention.

******* When I returned from caring for friends' hens and cats this morning, I sat down with my coloring book and 120 pencils and started to color. I listened to MSNBC tell me that Vice President Pence's portion of today's Electoral College vote counting was ceremonial. They also stated that 14 Senators and 140 Congressmen had agreed to dispute the votes from at least 6 states. This would lead to a 3 + hour delay for each disputed state, but even if all six were - for some unknown reason, as all were certified legal by the state itself - it would NOT change the outcome of the 2020 Presidential Election. It would just delay it, as Biden and Harris had more than enough Electoral votes to win.
They also reported on the large group of protesters that Rudy Giuliani and Trump were speaking to. At one point in time, they reported that Trump had urged the group to go to the Capitol - and he (Trump) might even walk there with them. He promptly got in his limo and returned to the White House. The Proud Boys, Qanon supporters, pro-Trump militia groups and other rabble-rousers began their walk to the Capitol building.
Pence convened the joint session of House and Senate for the Electoral vote count. Alabama and Alaska sailed through. BUT there was an objection raised for the third state of Arizona's electors and votes. There was a written document signed and sponsored by both a Senator and a Representative. The Senate went back to their chambers, with the Vice President presiding, and both parts of Congress began what was, by law, a 2 hour debate on the objection, before voting to support or rescind it. Fifteen minutes into the debate, the Trump protesters, now a mob, broke through barriers and attacked the Capitol building. Windows and doors were broken - Congress members went into hiding and lockdown. One woman was shot and killed; 3 more had medical emergencies and died because medical aid could not get inside the Capitol.
Once the mob had broken inside the Capitol, Trump went into the Rose Garden and filmed a short video clip telling his followers, "We love you." State troopers from Maryland and Virginia were deployed as the Mayor of DC was trying to get permission to have the National Guard deploy to the Capitol. National Guard units from Maryland and Virginia were deployed by their Governors to give assistance at the Capitol building. Three and a half hours later, the Mayor of DC was given permission by the DOD to use the National Guard that had been "on stand by" since yesterday. By that time, everything was almost over. DC Metro Police were the most visible, wearing bright yellow vests.
The protesters were cleared out of the Capitol - but they had been inside the Senate and House meeting rooms, offices, and all normally open areas. The mob took selfies sitting at private office desks, hanging from woodwork, sitting in Vice President Pence's chair in the Senate, etc. They were finally dispersed with flash-bang grenades and tear gas. There were more than 3,000 protesters who took part and encroached on the Capitol grounds; more than 700 entered the Capitol building, many carrying guns.
Only 52 arrests have been made. Washington DC had a 6 pm to 6 am curfew imposed by the Mayor. Congress is still debating electors and votes at 11:20 pm (MST). What scared me most was a report by an MSNBC reporter who had casually asked a man a few questions. He said he was from Florida, and didn't know how long he'd be staying in and around DC. He stated that he and several other members of his militia group had come up to DC to make certain that Trump stayed in office. He stated that he and his militia friends would be back, with their weapons ready, until it was guaranteed that his man, President Trump, stayed in the White House for the next four years. *******

******* Five people died due to injuries incurred during the failed MAGA mob coup attempt at the Capitol on Wednesday. One was a Capitol police officer, who was a Trump supporter, who tried to stop members of the mob. The cause of his death is currently unknown, but a newspaper reported he was struck repeatedly in the head with a fire extinguisher. He died in an ICU at a local DC hospital.
The woman who died from a gunshot wound, inflicted by a Capitol police officer, was a 14-year Air Force veteran, a believer in the Qanon nonsense, and an ardent Trump supporter. Once a window was broken out that led to an area where the Speaker of the House was sheltering, she pushed other mob members out of the way, so she could be the first person to enter and "seize the Speaker." She was shot in the shoulder and died at a hospital.
A woman who proudly carried and vigorously waved a "Don't Tread On Me" flag entering the building. She was trampled to death by her co-MAGA-ites in the mob, inside the Capitol.
A man was in Statuary Hall, and had his handgun hidden in his back pocket, and his Taser hidden inside his jockey shorts. He somehow managed to tase his own testicles multiple times and died from heart failure.
I don't have information, as yet, on the fifth death. *******
